Forester: Harvesting

Location: Entabeni Plantation
Grade: C3
Reporting line: Plantation Manager

Role Mandate
To plan and control all plantation harvesting, thinning and clearfell activities at Entabeni plantation.

Key Accountabilities

  • Monitor transport of timber regarding collection and delivery
  • Ensure that Operating Harvesting Plan (OHP) is available for each current harvesting compartment
  • Monitor production and Logprog reports on a daily basis
  • Ensure that internal audit requirements relating to harvesting are met
  • Check that planning section does enumeration of harvesting compartments before commencing
  • Complete all volume reconciliations per compartment and send to planning department
  • Report completed work on PSM and log quality audits must be checked on a daily basis
  • Manage checklists to be filled in for each operation on a weekly basis
  • Ensure Best Operating Practices (BOP's) quality checklists are filled in on a daily basis by supervisor for own operations
  • Ensure Toolbox talks are held regularly and monitor compliance to Forestry best practices
  • Ensure post harvesting audit is done with Plantation Manager as soon as compartment is completed
  • Follow up on all customer complaints, control contractor daily operations regarding production, quality of work and safety
  • Ensure compliance in relation to Safety, Health, Environment standards and report all incidents onto DMS (data system)
  • Mark trees for thinning, ensure alignment to thinning regime and ensure that a thinning control is done before commencing thinning
  • Compile weekly checklist and post harvesting audit on completion
  • Report volume variances to the Plantation Manager and Planning Manager
  • Sign Goods Received Voucher to ensure work is done and quality up to standard
  • Ensure that no damage to remaining stand is done
  • Control plantation road team's operations and perform road condition assessment as part of post-harvest assessment
  • Monitor maintenance schedule to ensure that services are done on time and that licensing is done on time and without penalties
  • Establish training needs for subordinates and control production of all labour as per BOP's
  • Complete checklist for all operations in field and perform in-field quality checks for all operations as per BOP's
  • Control safety in all work aspects as per set safety standards
  • Control environmental aspects in field as per EMS
  • Manage staff performance and productivity
  • Control training needs to comply with safety standard and complete and control all safety registers
  • Supervise safety committee inspections, meetings and reports

Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 12
  • 3 year National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Forestry
  • BSc. / B-Tech Degree (NQF Level 7) in forestry will be an added advantage
  • 3 Years' experience in harvesting operations
  • Valid driver's licence
