Good News about Leptocybe Biological Control

The Director General of DAFF has followed through on his undertaking to us in our last meeting with him in CT and has signed the release of the Leptocybe nematode. This is apparently unprecedented as Prof Wingfield advised that it has previously taken years for such releases, so it is good news indeed and will hopefully start in due course to stem the impact of this pest. read more

The global sawlog price index in the 1Q/12 was down almost nine percent from early 2011

Reduced global demand for lumber has resulted in a reduction in the Global Sawlog Price Index by almost nine percent in 12 months, as well as a recent decline in the global trade of logs, as reported by the Wood Resource Quarterly. read more

There has been much speculation about Eucalyptus grandis being the best specie for pole production.  In recent years there have been Eucalyptus crosses made that would appear to be better for poles than the straight E. grandis, but pole treatment plants have been reluctant to take them. read more
Global trade of lumber up 25 percent the past two years, with signs of better times ahead for the lumber industry

International trade of softwood lumber increased in 2011 after two years in decline. Imports were up to China, Japan, Spain and South Korea while the fell in the US, the UK, France and Egypt. In Europe, lumber prices mighthave bottomed and could start increasing if additional supply will not outpace higher demand.
