Operator : Demin Plant (Grade 11)

Sappi Southern Africa Ltd.


The incumbent in this position will effectively maintain the quality and quantity of boiler make-up water, to meet plant demand.



  • Conducts pre and post inspections of plant before starts and stops.
  • Prepare plant for start-up.
  • Start-up and Stop plant.
  • Monitor and control plant during normal running conditions.
  • Stabilise abnormal and emergency plant conditions.
  • Shut down plant for
    - Maintenance Shut
    - Normal Shut
    - Minor stoppages
  • Isolate plant when required to.
  • Completes plant checklists, routine inspections and report all defects, via SAP notifications or to Foremen on shift.
  • Analyze the water samples by carrying out various tests.
    - PH
    - Conductivity
  • Offloads and Transfers caustic and sulphuric acid to relevant storages, using correct PPE's.
  • Maintain chemical dosing rates according to required specifications.
  • Adjust continuous blowdown rates according to boiler water specification.
  • Carries out regeneration of trains as and when required.
  • Completes logs and log sheet for data history purposes.
  • Carries out brine washes on anion and mixed bed vessels.
  • Checks and reports resin losses during backwashes.
  • Comply with all relevant SHEQ requirements of the job.
  • Identify and take corrective action in terms of SHEQ conditions and hazards.
  • Maintains a high level of good housekeeping in the workplace at all times.

  • Matric and N3 Pulp and Paper Certificate (4 subjects)
  • Computer Literate (MS Office Package)
  • Minimum 5 Years Plant Operations Experience
