 is seeking a suitably qualifed to develop tactical plans in the area of operation to operationalise long term strategic objectives through optimising forestry fibre resources

REPORTING TO: THE GENERAL MANAGER

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure that the annual plan of operations (APO) is executed in line with tactical plans (3-5 year plans). Integrate tactical plans across all the plantations/management units in the area of operation.
  • Ensure that a sales plan for the area is developed in collaboration with other relevant departments.
  • Develop an annual budget based on the approved APO.
  • Compile special projects(3yrs) that enhance business and effective risk management
  • Ensure that the monthly sales volume is monitored and reconciled with the sales plan of each product in order to meet market demand.
  • Ensure that the re-establishment program (planting and coppice regeneration) for the area is consolidated and monitored.
  • Manage plant orders with Nurseries and ensure that the Temporary Unplanted targets are achieved within budget constraints.
  • Ensure that crops are monitored to ensure that through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management) maximum yields within cost constraints are achieved
  • Monitor the readiness of all resources and their ability to respond immediately in the event of fires.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with neighbours and other corporates in the Fire Protection Association to foster cooperation and support among members.
  • Ensure that an integrated tactical alien plant control plan is in place for the area. Monitor implementation of the plan in commercial and open areas
  • Ensure that the road networks in the area are maintained to standard to ensure accessibility, effective utilisation of equipment, costs and adherence to environmental standards.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders at a district level (such as district municipalities) and monitor relationships with local communities, neighbours and contractors.
  • Identify early warning signs for issues and escalate to the general manager.
  • Identify and negotiate new contracts for area/district harvesting, shorthaul, silviculture and fire protection contractors within the constraints as defined in Sappi contract terms and conditions. Ensure that rate parameters are maintained.
  • Manage and monitor quality, delivery, safety and service level adherence for all forestry contractors in the area.
  • Ensure that all regulatory requirements pertaining to forestry management are adhered to in the area
  • Ensure that Timber Control System (TCS) procedures are adhered to, that timber meets mill specifications and that ISO standards are met.
  • Engage with internal audit to guide risk identification and effectiveness of control measures.
  • Prepare the annual budget of for the area and manage it including monthly monitoring and forecasting.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • National Diploma in Forestry, Agriculture or Horticulture
  • Bachelors' Degree in Forestry or related disciplines would be preferred
  • At least 8 years relevant experience
