Situation report from Department of Forest & Wood Science - University of Stellenbosch

 stellenbosch

Stellenbosch University is open and functioning as normal.  University management is committed to business as usual by taking necessary steps in conjunction with University upper management, the Dean of students, university campus security, and SAPS.  Management maintains regular communication with Faculties, Departments, students and parents related to the status of events and planned mitigation. However the situation remains volatile, but is continuously being monitored. Staff and students have been urged to remain calm and exercise patience, not to respond to provocation or to confront protest groups.

  • There have been ongoing demonstrations on the main campus with limited disruptions of classes and tests in faculties such as for example Science, Arts, Education and Engineering by a relatively small group of student's approximately 50 to 60 in number. Yesterday workers and students from other institutions joined SU students and about 160 protesters moved around on the campus with the aim of disrupting activities. Despite additional security measures and access control to buildings, some lectures were cancelled and buildings had to be temporarily closed.
  • The Department of Forest and Wood Science has experienced no disruption to date with lectures and tests progressing as per usual. We however keep access locked
  • The University, Faculty of AgriSciences and Department of Forest and Wood Science are committed to seeing the year through (lectures, tests and examinations and graduations) as scheduled in the UniversityCalendar.

Regards
Pierre Ackerman.
