India: The New Market for Woodchip Imports!

India began importing woodchips in mid-2013, and the trade continues to expand in 2014

For many years woodchip suppliers have been trying to open up a new market in India, which has experienced a surge in pulpwood prices in recent years. The West Coast Paper Mills was the first company in India to begin importing woodchips in mid-2013, and is the largest woodchip importer by far in that country. We are delighted to announce that Mr. R.K. Chopra, Head of Raw Material Procurement for West Coast Paper Mills (WCPM), the largest Indian woodchip importing company,WCPM, will discuss this new emerging market in his presentation, “India: The New Market for Woodchip Imports” at the Santiago conference on November 3, 2014. WCPM is certified for FSC Chain of Custody and FSC Controlled Wood, and has one of the best developed farm forestry programs (“captive plantations”) in India, with clonal development for eucalyptus, acacia and casuarina.

The Atlantic Region Woodchip Market – Where is it heading in 2015?

Although the market for woodchip imports in the Atlantic region is much smaller than the Pacific region, it is a key part of global trade in woodfiber. At this year’s conference, we have two highly qualified speakers to cover two of the key markets, Turkey and Iberia.
Mr. Orhan Olcen is External Purchasing Chief for Kastamonu Entegre, one of the biggest woodchip imports in the Atlantic region. Kastamonu is part of the US$2.1 billion Hayat Holding, and has 13 wood panel plants in Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia Herzegovina and Russia. Mr. Olcen will provide his perspective on importing logs and woodchips from USA, Venezuela, Canada, Ukraine and Brazil.
Mr. Jose Reis is the owner of BSL S.A., an international logistics company based in Portugal. BSL trades extensively in woodchips and biomass (as well as steel, textiles and cement), and has its own logging equipment and trucks for harvesting and transport. The company’s partnership with an important German firm, MTL – Maritime Transport Logistic, allows it to handle water-borne as well as land-based trade in woodchips and biomass. Mr. Reis will discuss the pulpwood imports in Spain and Portugal, the important cross-border trade between those companies, and the developing trade in biomass in southern Europe.

New Owner for the Conference

Conference founders Peter Lyford-Pike, Dennis Neilson and Bob Flynn are pleased to announce that Boston, USA based RISI has acquired the International Woodfibre Resources and Trade Conference. RISI is the world’s largest information company provider to the forest products industry, covering all sectors of the forestry and forest products industry worldwide. Its now direct involvement in the marketing and advertising of this Santiago Conference will likely attract even more delegates to this meeting from its extensive global database of contacts, which will enhance networking opportunities. While RISI will take over registration and conference management immediately, delegates will likely notice no difference in this Santiago conference, and Peter, Dennis and Bob will be involved in planning future conferences.

New Project Panel – Hear the latest news on development of woodchip and biomass projects and plantation investments

One of the most popular segments of our conference program is the “New Projects Panel”, where a selection of registered delegates is given 5-7 minutes to briefly highlight a new project. These have included new woodchip supply operations, new customers looking for fiber sourcing, companies developing innovative technologies for the industry, and significant plantation investment projects. These speaking slots are available only to registered delegates. We still have some slots available on this panel-- interested participants should contact Bob Flynn rflynn@risi.com

Conference registration rates were scheduled to increase as of August 16, but we have extended this deadline for higher rates until September 1, please register now to save money!

To register, go to our web site www.woodfibreconference.com and follow the Register link.

Field Trip is Sold Out!
