Good News Regarding Port Tariff Increase for 2012/13

In 2011 the National Ports Authority (NPA), the most profitable division of Transnet, applied to the Ports Regulator of SA for an increase in tariffs and port dues of 18.06% - three times above inflation.

As was the case last year, FSA made a submission is opposition to this request to the Ports Regulator. However, unlike last year, FSA was invited in December 2011 to a one-on-one meeting with the consultants who had been appointed by the Ports Regulator to investigate the entire issue of tariffs.  This proved to be a very fruitful meeting in which FSA was able to articulate its objections to the increase, the overall problems experienced with the NPA and the need to amend the methodology used to calculate their requested tariff increases.

I am pleased to be able to report that the Ports Regulator, following its appraisal of the requested increase, announced on Tuesday 14th February that they had granted the NPA a 2.76% increase.  This is indeed to be welcomed as it will, for once, actually decrease the cost of doing business rather than increasing it.  I have attached for your information a copy of a report on this matter which appeared in the Business Day, on Wednesday 15th February.
