REMINDER: Invitation to ICFR Occasional Seminar: DST initiatives and their links to Forestry  and Forestry Research

The is a reminder of our special upcoming Occasional Seminar, given by colleagues from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) - on DST's support and contributions to Forestry Research.

This is an exciting and very useful opportunity for all working in forestry research and the management and application thereof, to engage with the DST, to learn more about current initiatives, that can provide significant benefits to the forest sector.

Further details are attached.

The Seminar will be divided into two presentations, each with time for questions and discussion.

1. Overview of the Bioeconomy Strategy

By Dr Maneshree Jugmohan-Naidu, Director: Biotechnology, DST

The presentation will provide insight on the science-based Bio-economy Strategy, approved by Cabinet in November last year, which positions bio-innovation as essential to the achievement of government's industrial and social development goals.  The strategy calls for industry, science councils, government departments and academia to cooperate closely to ensure that biotechnology and bio-innovations are market relevant and find easier application in South Africa.

2. Overview of DST intentions for  (a) The Eucalyptus Genome programme and
(b) The Forestry Industry consortium proposal (supported by the DST Sector Innovation Fund)
By Dr Ben Durham, Chief Director: Biotechnology and Health Innovation, DST

The presentation will provide insight into DST considerations on Forestry support - both from the Technology Innovation and the Socio-Economic Innovation Partnerships programmes - and expectations from the support
