FSA release VERSION FIVE of their Environmental Guidelines

Forestry South Africa Announcement

21 January 2025, FSA are pleased to announce the publication of the latest version of the Environmental Guidelines for Commercial Forestry Plantations in South Africa (Revision 5 – 2024).

The first edition – Guidelines for Environmental Conservation Management in Commercial Forests in South Africa – appeared in February 1995 as a printed document that could only be reproduced by photocopying. Since then, there have been several printed versions and in 2016 the first electronic version was produced and made available on the Forestry South Africa website.

This 5th revision includes updates on applicable legislation, best practices, chemicals and pesticide uses, carbon calculations, climate change implications and the inclusion of new chapters on emergency incidents and disaster management, greenhouse gas reporting, regulations for hazardous chemical agents and integrated pest management.

Apart from Chapter 2, which details all relevant environmental legislation, the Guideline chapters follow a basic presentation structure that begins with a general description of the subject matter informing the reader of the most relevant issues. This is followed by a statement of intent describing the desired outcomes/objectives the forester should aim for, before closing with the measures and actions (best practices) required to achieve the desired outcome.

The Forester Guidelines, produced to accompany the last version of the Environmental Guidelines will be updated accordingly and expanded upon. These ‘one-page-highlights’ have proved immensely useful in communicating the ‘key issues’ to those implementing the guidelines on the ground.

“FSA Environmental Guidelines is indicative of the commitment that the Forestry Industry places on sustainable forestry management practices and responsible environmental stewardship. They are a collaborative effort that highlights the immense value found in pooling resources to address shared goals. This has been a key feature of the Sector, that has enabled it to adapt and evolve to navigate local and international pressures while remaining globally competitive. Congratulations and thank you to Dr John Scotcher and his team who have put in a gargantuan effort to revise the Guidelines.” – Dr Ronald Heath, FSA Director of Research and Protection.
