Tucabaca: The Pioneering Forest And Guardian Of The Region

Bolivia has just reached a milestone: the first FSC certification of protected areas in Latin America. This achievement goes beyond an international label – it helps ensure that more than 260,000 hectares of forest in the Bolivian Chiquitanía will continue to sustain life.

Tucabaca, located in the department of Santa Cruz, is not just a place on the map; it is a silent guardian. It protects the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the biodiversity that connects us to nature. Its forests store over 12 million tonnes of carbon, regulate 45 rivers and 30 streams, and preserve a unique ecosystem home to more than 1,198 species of plants and animals. Every time we turn on a tap, breathe clean air, or admire a sunset in the Chiquitanía, we are experiencing the direct impact of this forest.

A recognition of care and commitment

FSC certification helps ensure that Tucabaca is managed responsibly, sustainably, and with respect for local communities. The certification also protects the cultural and heritage values of the Chiquitano Indigenous Peoples who inhabit the area.

As the Governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, stated: “Today, Tucabaca becomes an example of sustainable development and conservation for Bolivia and the world.” Meanwhile, Vice Minister Jorge Ávila emphasized that this achievement “benefits all humanity by safeguarding an extraordinarily valuable area against threats such as deforestation and climate change.”

Protecting Tucabaca means protecting our future

The Tucabaca forest not only conserves nature but also strengthens climate resilience and water security in the region. With more than 94% natural forest cover, it maintains ecosystem health, regulates the climate, and directly contributes to mitigating the impacts of global climate change.

Bolivian leadership in Latin America

With this recognition, Bolivia not only secures the conservation of Tucabaca for future generations but also positions itself as a regional leader in responsible forest management – demonstrating that sustainability is both possible and beneficial for all, while paving the way for neighboring countries across Latin America.

This milestone was made possible through a partnership between the Departmental Government of Santa Cruz, the Municipal Government of Roboré, the management committee, local communities, and organizations such as Fundación Amigos de la Naturaleza (FAN) and CFV/FSC Bolivia. This joint effort demonstrates that conservation is not only viable but can also generate opportunities for sustainable management and climate financing in the region.

Tucabaca stands as an inspiring example for Latin America – a reminder that natural resources can be managed with responsibility, care, and a long-term vision.
