Load Cell Failure In Weighing Scales: Signs, Causes, And Fixes

Identify common load cell failure signs, likely causes and practical fixes before a small weighing fault becomes downtime.

Signs of load cell failureWarning signs include unstable readings, zero drift, poor repeatability, corner errors, overload messages and readings that change when cables are moved. On multi-cell platforms, one failed cell can affect the whole scale.

Common causesShock loading, overload, forklift impact, water ingress, corrosion, lightning, cable damage and mechanical binding are common causes. Welding near load cells without correct precautions can also damage equipment.

Fixes and preventionInspect the structure first. Remove debris, check cables and junction boxes, and compare corner readings. Replace failed cells with compatible models and recalibrate the system. Protect cables and operators from repeat causes.

Quick checklist

  • Inspect for impact and corrosion.
  • Check cable damage first.
  • Look for water in junction boxes.
  • Compare corner readings.
  • Calibrate after replacement.

Frequently asked questionsCan a load cell be repaired?
Usually failed load cells are replaced, although cables or connectors may be repairable.

Can one bad cell affect a whole scale?
Yes, especially on multi-load-cell platforms.

What happens after replacement?
The scale should be calibrated and tested before use.
