Post: Discover The Science Behind Books and Timber

Discover The Science Behind Books and Timber

From the floor of a growing forest to the quiet comfort of your favorite armchair, timber has always played a vital role in human history and culture. Every page in a classic novel began as a tree, nurtured in the soil, harvested with purpose, and manufactured into paper.

Around International Literacy Day on 8 September, an article by the South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA) offered a powerful reminder of how irreplaceable paper literature remains. Digital screens provide instant convenience, but they cannot replicate the grounding experience of reading a physical book.

The true advantages extend far beyond nostalgia. The biological properties of natural wood and human nervous system responses reveal why the benefits of reading physical books are grounded in real science.

The Science Lignin & Visual Ergonomics

To understand why paper feels better on the eyes, look at the molecular structure of timber. Wood strength comes from lignin, a natural polymer that binds plant fibers together. During pulping and papermaking, lignin management determines the brightness, durability, and tone of the finished page.

Unlike digital screens that project active backlight and short-wavelength blue light, soft-toned timber paper acts as a diffuse reflector. Paper absorbs harsh overhead glare and distributes ambient light evenly across its surface.

This optical difference significantly cuts visual fatigue (asthenopia). By eliminating backlight glare and invisible screen flicker, natural paper reduces strain on the eyes. It also and prevents the body’s sympathetic nervous system from entering a stressed, high-alert state.

Why Natural Wood Calms Us

Timber brings warmth and serenity into physical spaces, and paper carries those same biological benefits. This phenomenon stems from biophilia, the evolutionary human connection to natural organic materials like wood, stone, and wool.

Studies cataloged by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) demonstrate that interacting with natural wood products activates our parasympathetic nervous system. When you feel the subtle texture of paper pulp or smell the natural compounds of an open book, your body responds at a physiological level:

  • Cortisol (stress hormone) levels decrease
  • Heart rates stabilize
  • Mind and body enter a state of calm focus

Spatial Memory & Physical Page Mapping

Beyond visual comfort and stress relief, physical books change how our brains process and retain information. Screen reading frequently leads to passive skimming, but physical paper encourages full sensory integration.

“According to a study by Mindlab International at the University of Sussex, reading can lower stress levels by some 68%, and a paper book, newspaper or magazine makes a more relaxing companion, unlike blue light from a screen which delays sleep and suppresses melatonin.” — SAWPA article.

Our minds build spatial maps of information. When you turn physical pages, your brain registers the shifting weight between your hands, the location of text on a page, and the visual layout of the sheet. This tactile index anchors memory far more effectively than scrolling through digital text.

Building Connections Through Books and Timber

A physical book is one of the most elegant, durable timber products ever created. It translates the natural resilience of trees into an interactive tool for learning, reflection, and quiet focus.

Next time you open a paperback or hardbound book, take a moment to appreciate the natural timber fibers beneath your fingers. In an increasingly digital world, returning to paper remains a proven way to reduce stress, improve focus, and reconnect with nature.
