Post: Bundu Sets Higher Bar with First Quality Pledge Certificate

Bundu Poles has deepened its leadership role in the timber treatment industry by being the first company to complete the Quality Pledge process and receive a certificate of excellence.

Bundu is one of the most established operations in South Africa, with markets locally and in other African countries, and has been a Dolphin Bay client for many years.

“I’m very chuffed about completing the pledge,” said Bundu owner Teunis Janson. “This is something we should be doing as an industry, to continue improving confidence in CCA.

“We have to turn perceptions around – and with the damage coronavirus has done, this is more important than ever. None of us can afford a bad name.”

The Dolphin Bay Quality Pledge is a platform on which timber treatment companies can commit to excellence. Signatories of the Pledge undertake to ensure that their operations are environmentally sound and produce treated timber of a high quality.

The ultimate aim is to contribute to the successful development and long-term sustainability of the wood-treatment sector in Africa.

“This is something we should all do, as an industry, to continue improving
confidence in CCA” – Bundu Poles owner Teunis Janson

Bundu was largely compliant with the pledge before signing up to its process last year, said Mark Duckham of Dolphin Bay. “Bundu never cuts corners on quality; it’s simply not in their business ethos,” said Mark. “They are an outstanding company to do business with, from both a supplier’s and a customer’s point of view.”

Since signing the pledge, the company has ensured that some outstanding issues of environmental compliance were addressed.  “It took effort but will have even greater rewards”, said Teunis.

“I can show my existing and new customers that I’m doing things responsibly and fulfilling all the measures needed to produce quality treated timber – and that I’m not only doing these things to make money but for the right reasons.

“When I took over this business from my dad many years ago, the big problem in our industry was that many guys were not treating timber properly.  My dad taught me that your name is everything. If you throw it away, you’ll work twice as hard to get it back.

“If we do the right thing, we will grow our businesses. A lot of the time, people are very short-sighted, considering only the short-term benefits of their actions. We need to think in the long term.

“Committing to the pledge should be standard practice – hopefully, individual treaters will do it of their own free will.”
