“I am excited at how TIP-Mag has developed over the past four issues. In particular, how it has become an important platform for communicating the world class research being conducted by our sector.” – Dr Ronald Heath, FSA Director: Research and Protection
Issue Four includes opinion pieces from Dr Ilaria Germishuizen – looking at how geospatial technologies have evolved from mapping to shaping sustainable forestry; and Louise van Wyk – on whether Sustainable Development Goals have a place in South African forestry.

“It seems fitting that in an issue released just before the United Nations (UN) International Day celebrating Women and Girls in Science we have two opinion pieces written by prominent female scientists, both of whom are driving the sector forward in their respective fields” Dr Heath continues.
This issue also includes an Interest Piece by Dr Richard Burgdorf that considers the feasibility of using Near InfraRed (NIR) spectroscopy to screen seeds for germination properties and how this could benefit the industry. A Technical Note from Dr Ilaria Germishuizen and Prof Brett Hurley, presenting the 2021 findings of the Leptocybe invasa National Monitoring Programme rounds off this issue. Ilaria and Brett’s article provides a comprehensive overview of where the industry stands in regards to this important forestry pest species.
