Chris Els started timber farming with the desire to add value to farming and led to the erecting of a timber sawmill. The business was known as Els Brothers with offices in Vryheid and our operations extended throughout South Africa.

Shanyela Timbers was formed in November 2004 together with a BEE partner and owned manufacturing facilities. Shanyela was now well established in the market and further growth took place.

Shanyela Timbers embarked on further expansion with a merge acquisition of SMT (Sappi Mining Timber) in 2008, and changed the name from Shanyela Timbers to BedrockMS. In 2010 Bedrock bought the Lowveld Forests from Mondi (30 000 hectares). Chris Els was the Chief Operating Officer of Bedrock overseeing 7 sawmills, together with the forestry operations, sales and marketing of timber to the gold and platinum mines as well as dunnage to the Steel, Granite and Stevedoring industries.

In September 2014 Bedrock sold its forestry assets to MTO and Chris sold his shares in Bedrock. He started Azkoyen, a company trading in the agricultural space, mainly in forestry, timber, optimisation and sawmilling.

Chris Els then invested in Peak Timbers, a forestry asset in Swaziland, to secure fibre resources. Chris heads up Azkoyen, as the CEO focusing on strategic and growth strategies.
