Northern Natal Seedlings

History:
Northern Natal Seedling is a family run business which was established in 1984, mainly starting with supplying shrubs and vegetable seedlings to the local community. Due to the rapid growth of the forestry industry in the region, the decision was taken in 1986 to introduce a forestry section to the business structure. In the first season a total of 80 000 eucalyptus and wattle seedlings were produced. Over the years with learning the expertise of producing quality forestry seedlings, Northern Natal Seedlings have grown to a state of the art nursery producing  about 25 million forestry and 5 million vegetable seedlings annually. In the last 15 years Roland and Lothar Meier have joined the family business.

Nursery:
In 2007 the decision was taken to purchase a farm on the outskirts of Paulpietersburg to build a state of the art nursery to do the necessary expanding to keep up with the every growing demand in the national forestry industry. The new nursery included a Hamilton seedsower imported from England, state of the art germination room to assist with uniformity in seedling growth and a nursery section which can accommodate 18 million seedlings at any given time. In the last two years hot houses were erected to assist with a clonal project that was started. A nursery with a capacity of 4 million seedlings was built in Piet Retief and a holding nursery in Moolman to assist growers in these areas with a quality seedlings and good service.

Seedlings:
NNS pride themselves on producing a good quality seedling. Samples are sent away to FABI in Pretoria at regular intervals to insure no unwanted diseases and pests are found in the nursery environment. NNS produce all major eucalyptus, pine and wattle seedlings planted in the South African Forestry Industry, with the latest addition being a euc and pine clonal project. NNS belongs to S.G.A.S.A (Seedlings Growers Association South Africa) and are annually audited to assure growers of high quality seedlings.

Transport:
NNS transport division consists of three truck and trailer units with a capacity of 100 000 seedlings each and three KIA 2700 with trailers with a capacity of 35 000 seedlings to assist with delivery in local areas. Seedlings are delivered to Sabie/Nelspruit in the north and Ixopo/Bulwer in the South. The majority of seedlings are delivered to cooperate companies consisting of Mondi, Sappi, Komatiland, York Timbers and Sappi Usutu in Swaziland.

Future:
At the moment, certain expertise in the industry haven been obtained to assist with getting the euc and pine clonal programs to a level where we can assure all growers of quality clonal material. Ccertain new structures are also being implemented at our main nursery in Paulpietersburg to obtain quality in seedlings growth and customer service. A holding nursery in the Vryheid region was built to assist growers in these planting areas. Ongoing in-nursery and in-field trials are being done in conjunction with two research and fertilizer companies and growers to obtain data to produce and market seedlings which obtain optimal yield and growth and would be free of all unwanted pathogens.
