2026 Forestry Science Symposium

2026 Forestry Science Symposium

Date: 24 – 26 November 2026
Location: Stellenbosch University
More Info: FSA

Registration is officially open for the Forestry Science Symposium 2026, taking place under the theme “Green Horizons” from 24 to 26 November 2026 in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. With places limited, FSA members and forestry stakeholders are encouraged to secure their spot early.

The 2024 in person relaunch, held in KwaZulu-Natal with South African Institute of Forestry (SAIF) and the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research (ICFR), was a resounding success. This time, FSA and SAIF are joined by Stellenbosch University, stepping in as co-host and lending academic depth to proceedings.

The symposium brings together researchers, practitioners, industry leaders, policymakers and students to explore how science and innovation can strengthen the sustainability, resilience and value of South Africa’s timber resources. In turn, promoting dialogue across the full forest value chain, from genetics and silviculture to sensing, processing and ecosystem stewardship.

Days one and two unfold at STIAS (the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study), with day three moving to the Paul Sauer Building. Themes span climate-resilient forestry systems, forest health and emerging biotic risks, biodiversity and ecosystem services, precision forestry and decision support, wood quality and value chain innovation, advanced tree improvement and genomics, and sustainable silviculture. Beyond the sessions, expect speed talks, a poster session, a round table, the IMPACT Open-Air Lab excursion and a gala dinner at Lourensford Wine Estate.

A call for abstracts is also open for those wishing to present (oral, speed talk or poster), closing shortly on the 30 June 2026. With attendance capped, we’d encourage everyone to register without delay, whether presenting or not. This is a rare chance to engage with the science shaping our sector’s future. Don’t miss out.
