Forestry sector to mark 15 years of transformation & upliftment through heartwarming stories and a panel discussion
The event is in recognition 15 years of transformation, community development and empowerment in the South African forestry and forest products sector and serves as the Forest Sector Charter Council’s anniversary event. The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Ms Bernice Swarts will deliver the keynote address.
The morning will also showcase stories of community upliftment, enterprise and supplier development, skills development, and empowerment such as a school desk project in Weza, KZN, by the sawmilling sector, an e-learning programme in Zululand, a women-led enterprise in Mpumalanga and the She Is Forestry initiative that is opening the minds of rural-based learners to the career opportunities in forestry.
A panel discussion with industry and government representatives will not only review the forestry sector transformation milestones to date, but it will look to the future with a renewed commitment to inclusive growth, sustainable practices, and enhanced community development.

ABOUT THE FOREST SECTOR CHARTER COUNCIL
The Forest Sector Charter Council was established through the promulgation of Forest Sector Code that oversees and reports on the transformation agenda and performance of the South African forestry industry and the six sub-sectors – timber growers, contractors, pulp and paper, sawmilling, poles and charcoal.
PROGRAMME OUTLINE
- Ms Nelly Ndlovu, Chairperson of the FSCC and CEO of Mondi Zimele, will open proceedings.
- Executive Director of the FSCC Ms Khosi Mavimbela briefly share the milestones of the forestry’s journey in the context of empowerment, transformation, community development and skills upliftment.
- The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, Ms Bernice Swarts, will deliver a keynote address.
- Talk Radio 702 presenter Ms Gugu Mhlungu will lead a panel discussion comprising representatives from industry and government.
