Gutter Ready: Essential Autumn Maintenance for Every Home

South Africa has experienced significant rainfall in most regions this summer, and with the arrival of autumn, now is the time to ensure your gutters are clear. “Gutter maintenance is one of those necessary chores that often gets overlooked…until there is an issue,” says Timothy Isabirye, Marketing Manager at Husqvarna South Africa. “But with the above-average rain we’ve had, there’s a good chance that leaves, twigs, and other debris have collected in them which can lead to water overflow and potential damage to your home’s foundation, roof, and walls due to lack of drainage.”

“And while the specifics of rainfall patterns can vary, the transition from summer to autumn also has the potential for more rain in some areas,” he adds. “One only has to think back to the devastating floods that took place in Kwazulu-Natal in April 2019 and again in April 2022. So, doing a little bit of maintenance now can reduce the chance of future blockages when more debris, like autumn leaves, begins to fall, and save you from costly repairs down the line.”

Additional Reasons to Prioritise Gutter Maintenance Now

  • Prevents Ice Dams: In regions that experience cold snaps (like Gauteng and the Free State), trapped water in gutters can freeze, causing ice dams. This increases the risk of leaks, roof damage, and gutters detaching due to the added strain of the ice. Clearing gutters before cold weather is key to avoiding these issues.
  • Stops Pest Infestations: Clogged gutters create the perfect breeding ground for pests like rodents and even birds looking for shelter or nesting spots. And while the risk is much lower than in warmer months, keeping your gutters clear will avoid any potential issues.
  • Extends Gutter Lifespan: Regular maintenance prevents rust, corrosion, and sagging caused by heavy debris.

How to Clean Your Gutters Effectively
“Cleaning your gutters may seem like a big job, but with the right approach and tools, it’s quicker than you think,” says Isabirye. “With a Husqvarna Pressure Washer, most homeowners can get the job done in around two hours – depending on the size and condition of the gutters. And what’s two hours compared to an empty wallet after you’ve had to pay for costly repairs should something go wrong?

He shares these practical guidelines for effective gutter cleaning:

  • Remove Debris Manually: Wear protective gloves and use a gutter scoop (or carefully use your hands) to remove accumulated leaves, twigs, and sediment from your gutters.
  • Inspect for Damage: While cleaning, check for cracks, loose fasteners, or rust, and address any issues promptly to prevent future issues.
  • Flush with Water: Use your Husqvarna Pressure Washer on a low setting to test whether water is flowing freely through the downspouts. If not, you may have a clog that needs attention.
  • Deep Clean: For built-up grime or moss, a Husqvarna Pressure Washer is an excellent tool. It effectively removes stubborn dirt, leaving your gutters completely clear and functional.

“When using a pressure washer, always start at a lower pressure setting and maintain a safe distance from the gutters,” advises Isabirye. “Too much force can damage old or weak gutters.” He also recommends using the right nozzle attachment to control the spray pattern and avoid unnecessary splatter.

While cleaning gutters may not be the most enjoyable task, it’s essential for home maintenance, particularly at the start of autumn and spring. And, investing in the right tools like a pressure washer can make the job easier and more effective.
