National Forest Week Policy Conference

During National Forest Week (week of September 17, 2023) FPAC held a policy conference on September 20, 2023. It was a pivotal event that highlighted the importance of policy panel discussions in shaping the future of Canada’s sustainable forest management. This gathering brought together experts and leaders in the forestry, fostering conversations on innovative strategies and policies crucial to maintaining Canada’s leadership in sustainable forestry.

The morning started off with a presentation and discussion by speakers David Coletto, President and CEO of Abacus Data, and Fraser Lockerbie, VP, Digital & Communications, Sussex Strategy about recent polling results on What Canadians know about forestry and what they want to see from the sector.

This was followed by a captivating breakfast keynote, Chris Turner, the author of How to be a climate optimist and dynamic panel sessions, which were the heart of the event.

The panel discussions revolved around two primary themes:

1. Adapting to Rapid Climate Change

Forests and the forest sector play a significant role in climate change mitigation by capturing CO2 in forests and wood products, and through material and energy substitution. This discussion examined the role forests play in reducing and removing GHG emissions, and how our industry is adapting to make Canadian forests more resilient to a rapidly changing climate.

2. Delivering Solutions to Achieve Canada’s Net Zero Future

Integration is growing between climate-change considerations and forest management strategies. This panel discussed sustainable practices that enhance carbon sequestration, promote biodiversity conservation and build community resilience – and provide tangible examples of powerful forestry solutions and the initiatives needed to incentivize climate-smart forestry in Canada.

Our conference was covered by Cable Public Affairs Channel (CPAC) – a leading destination for politics and public affairs broadcasts in Canada. To watch the footage, use the links below:
