Powering Modern Forestry: The Performance of the STIHL RMHS Chain

The STIHL Rapid Micro Harvester Special (RMHS) is a specialised saw chain engineered to meet the demanding requirements of modern mechanised forestry. Designed specifically for use on hydraulic harvester heads, this high-performance chain combines durability with precision cutting and offers up to 70% longer service life than conventional harvester chains. Delivering consistent performance whilst helping forestry operations reduce maintenance intervals and costly equipment downtime, the RMHS is an essential component for professional timber harvesting operations.

Built For Demanding Harvesting Environments

In large-scale forestry operations, harvesting equipment operates under intense loads and continuous working cycles. Chains used on harvester heads must therefore endure heavy mechanical stress, high cutting speeds and significant torque. The RMHS was developed by STIHL as a reinforced evolution of the Rapid Micro Harvester chain, specifically designed to handle these conditions.

Every critical component of the chain — including the drive links, tie straps, cutters and rivets — has been significantly strengthened to distribute stress more evenly across the entire chain. This reinforced construction allows the chain to withstand the high forces generated by powerful hydraulic harvesting heads while maintaining structural integrity over prolonged use.

High Cutting Performance with Reduced Resistance

At the core of the RMHS design is its semi-chisel cutter profile, featuring slim, straight-sided cutters that strike a balance between aggressive cutting performance and durability. This design reduces cutting resistance while maintaining excellent edge retention, allowing the chain to perform efficiently even in demanding timber harvesting conditions.

The slender, side-flattened tooth shape enables smoother cutting action and lower vibration levels, which contributes to greater operator comfort and machine stability during extended harvesting cycles. This smooth-running characteristic also minimises “chattering” during operation, ensuring cleaner cuts and improved overall efficiency when felling and delimbing trees mechanically.

Innovative Design for Extended Durability

A number of patented design elements contribute to the RMHS chain’s exceptional longevity. The cutter heels feature an asymmetrical shape that enlarges the running surface, reducing pressure on the cutters and improving wear resistance. Similarly, the tie straps incorporate asymmetrical running faces that increase the wear surface and reduce stress on the chain during operation. These design refinements ensure that forces acting on the chain are distributed more evenly, significantly reducing the likelihood of cracking or premature failure.

Another key innovation is STIHL’s OILOMATIC® lubrication system. This patented technology incorporates specially engineered oil channels and reservoirs that direct lubricant precisely to the chain’s critical wear areas. By improving lubrication distribution along the chain, the system helps minimise friction, reduce stretching and extend the overall service life of the chain and guide bar components.

Designed For Mechanised Forestry Applications

The RMHS chain is purpose-built for use on hydraulic harvester heads in mechanised logging operations and is not intended for handheld chainsaws. Its robust design and high durability make it particularly well suited for large-scale forestry applications where machines must operate continuously under heavy loads.

Typical applications include mechanised tree felling, delimbing and processing of timber in commercial forestry operations. The chain’s reliability and long wear life make it an ideal choice for forestry contractors and timber companies seeking to maximise productivity while keeping maintenance costs under control. By minimising chain replacement frequency and reducing the risk of failure, the RMHS supports uninterrupted harvesting workflows in demanding forest environments.

A Productivity-Focused Forestry Solution

With its reinforced construction, advanced lubrication system and efficient cutting geometry, the STIHL Rapid Micro Harvester Special represents a powerful solution for modern mechanised forestry. Designed to deliver exceptional durability and consistent cutting performance, the RMHS allows professional operators to work longer, cut more efficiently and maintain productivity in even the most demanding harvesting conditions.

For forestry professionals seeking reliability and performance in mechanised timber harvesting, the RMHS chain stands as a testament to STIHL’s ongoing commitment over the past century to innovation, engineering excellence and practical solutions for the global forestry industry.
