"Reinventing" A Timber Treatment Business

Dolphin Bay Chemicals - Lamtim

When Lance Chapman bought Lamtim 18 months ago, he began "reinventing" the company to do every aspect of business better.

He realised that to grow the company, he would need to optimise the quality of its products and its service levels to customers. An intense drive began to improve the factory and equipment, and to grow both the laminate and treated timber sides of the business.

He needed a CCA supplier who, like himself, would go out of their way to provide services as well as supply timber treatment products timeously.

Lamtim is a laminated and treated timber supplier with over 100 years' experience, located in Dargle in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Its main business was supplying laminated timber, and its timber treatment plant was underutilised until Lance took over, said Dolphin Bay Sales Executive Mark Duckham.

Since then, Lance has "turned the business around," observed Mark.

"Lance's appetite for growing the business is remarkable. He has taken advantage of the growing market for pine structural treated timber in KwaZulu-Natal that followed the Covid-19 lockdown.

"It's easy to see that Lamtim's volumes have increased, its business has picked up, and that the opportunity exists for them to get an increasing proportion of the local market."

"Mark has always been available to visit, has given advice freely, and has been a great help.
We would like to do more with Dolphin Bay in future."

Lamtim approached Dolphin Bay at the end of last year to discuss our timber treatment products and services and signed an agreement with us as a CCA supplier late last year.

"We want to produce top-quality products for the South African market," said Lance. "I knew Mark previously and he came highly recommended, as did Dolphin Bay. We realise we are remotely located, and it can be quite difficult to get to us, but Mark has always been available to visit, has given advice freely, and has been a great help.

"The terms of our agreement were a huge benefit to us, and we would like to do more with Dolphin Bay in future."

Dolphin Bay also provided training to Lamtim's operators, which was "brilliant," said Lance. "We've got three guys, who all needed a refresher course.

"Mark offered various perspectives and advice, and I think we're all doing things better now."
