Strengthening Indigenous Participation in Forest Governance Across Africa
In collaboration with REPALEAC, the FSC Indigenous Foundation (FSC-IF) brought together more than 50 Indigenous representatives, women, youth, and partners in Douala, Cameroon to strengthen dialogue on Indigenous Peoples’ participation in forest governance and FSC certification.
Participants, primarily from across Africa, shared experiences, priorities, and perspectives on making FSC certification more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to local realities, while highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and strong collective representation of Indigenous Peoples.
The discussions also created opportunities to strengthen regional collaboration and explore practical ways to ensure that the voices, knowledge, and priorities of Indigenous Peoples are meaningfully reflected in decisions affecting their forests, livelihoods, and communities.
FSC Africa was represented at the workshop by:
- Paul Opanga – Labour Issues Manager, FSC Africa.
- Patrick Piemme Epie – Sub-Regional Coordinator, Congo Basin and West Africa.
- William Lawyer – Policy and Standards Manager, Africa.
Following the workshop, FSC-IF expressed its appreciation to REPALEAC for its collaboration and to FSC Africa colleagues in attendance for sharing valuable insights on FSC standards and their implementation across the region.
