Cepi works to phase out both fossil materials and energies
The war in Ukraine has put the European Union under pressure to modernise its energy market and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. A proposal tabled by the European Commission has been welcomed by Cepi with relief, as it has been long asking for access to affordable clean energy.
In April, Cepi presented to the European Institutions a set of newly completed industrial projects from across Europe, all aiming to reduce the use of fossil energy and materials. Since 2005, the CO2 emissions of the European pulp and paper sector have already been reduced by 36% and by substituting fossil-based products, forest-based industries lower the EU’s total emissions by an estimated 410 Mt CO2 per year. The equivalent of taking 85 million cars – or the entire fleet of vehicles registered in Germany and Italy – off the road.
