Lagos – The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has revealed that the state government has made plans to unveil a policy document on forestry at the International Conference, slated to hold in Accra in May 2018.
According to the state governor, the document would be showcasing how it intends to work with international partners in managing its forest assets to boost economic growth in the through agriculture.
Obaseki who stated this during the inauguration of a 16-man Advisory Committee on Forestry, alongside the setting up of a Forestry Commission disclosed that the Advisory Committee would among others, assist the state government draft a policy document on forestry; advice on forestry plans they intend to put in place as well as assist in structuring the forestry commission.
This, he said, would aid the state government develop effective frameworks in managing its forestry assets in line with international best practices, as its relate to forest reservation, preservation, conservation and regeneration.
Obaseki stated that they are determined to put in place a framework to safeguard the resources God has endowed them with in terms of forest assets; adding that as part of the design of the Benin Industrial Park, a section of the park would be built on inputs from the state’s forestry sector.
On his part, Felix Idumah, Chairman of the Advisory Committee expressed appreciation to the governor for the appointment and gave assurance that the committee would deliver on its terms of reference in a timely manner.
