The future of forestry by the women leading the way – Happy Women’s Month from FSA
Dream of being a trail blazer, of lifting others as you rise, of addressing climate change, or being part of a more sustainable and transformational future? This is a guide to walking in the footsteps of the women leading the way.
PRETORIA – 8 August 2023 – In celebration of Women’s Month, Forestry South Africa (FSA) asked the Forestry Sector’s most influential women to write thought leadership articles on their specific field, area of expertise or experience in the Sector. The result, a special edition of our Forestry in Focus magazine that is packed full of exceptional advice given by inspiring role models.
South Africa’s Forestry Sector has grown from a seed, or sapling, planted over a century ago and for most of those decades it has been dominated by men. However, over the last 20 years, women have come to the forefront and become an integral aspect of every possible career and position within the Sector – from machine operators to C-suite executives, small business enterprise owners to researchers and technicians. Today, there is not a role, responsibility or job prospect that women cannot fill.
Ten women who know this more than most are the forestry trail blazers featured in FSA’s Women’s Month Forestry In Focus special edition. Each woman is a leader in her field and between them they have amassed years of experience and developed an array of novel approaches to achieving greatness. They are mentors and role models to many, and through these articles their reach will be extended beyond their colleagues and out to all those in the Forestry Sector and beyond.
FP&M Seta Executive Director, Dr Felleng Yende, discusses the steps needed to plant the South African Forestry Sector on a global map. Transformation across the Sector is covered by Forest Sector Charter Council Chair of Directors, Nelly Ndlovu. While Chair of FSA’s Environmental Management Committee, Louise van Wyk, explains how the forestry landscape provides the perfect blueprint for a multifunctional landscape approach. Enjoy Executive Director of the Forestry and Agriculture Training Organisation, Pamela Naidoo’s take on how to be an influencer and change agent. Both articles by Krelyne Andrews, Sappi Southern Africa GM Sustainability: Dissolving Pulp and Jane Molony, Executive Director of the Paper Manufacturing Association of South Africa, consider the sustainability and climate friendly nature of forestry. Ilse Botman, GM of SAFCOLs Centre of Excellence and Kerry Davies, Mondi South Africa’s Learning Development Manager, both provide excellent careers advice for those wanting to be forestry trail blazers. While MTO Group’s Chief Stakeholder Relations Officer, Itumeleng Langeni stresses the importance of lifting while you rise. These icons of the Forestry Sector are joined by Khethokuhle Zondi, whose unique approach to getting into the Sector has singled her out and made her a worthy contributor to this special edition.
