US lumber prices reached unprecedented highs in the 2Q/21. For example,
the costs for 2×4 framing pine lumber inthe US South averaged
almost $800/m³ in May, up from $210/m³ as recent as February 2020 and nearly four times as much as the 20-year average price for southern yellow pine.

Softwood sawlog prices have gone up in 21 of 22 WRQ regions worldwide
in the past year. By far, the most significant increases have occurred
throughout Europe and British Columbia. The Global Sawlog Price
Index (GSPI) jumped 10% q-o-q in the 2Q/21.

The forecasted growth in wood pellet production in Europe will increase
competition for wood fiber and require new feedstock sources Europe’s
pellet industry is the largest in the world and is expected to continue
to grow strongly, at least until 2025. 

In the 3Q/20, the Global Hardwood Fiber Price Index (HFPI) was up by
1.6% to $81.17/odmt, following a 16-year low in the previous quarter.
The first q-o-q increase in almost two years was mainly driven by a
weakening of the US dollar against currencies in all WRQ countries
except Russia.

Strong lumber sales and a weakening US dollar moved sawlog prices upward in many markets worldwide in the 3Q/20. The most significant price increases occurred in Western US, Northern and Eastern Europe, and Oceania.
